Live Webinar: Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy

This is a LIVE webinar. The webinar will be about 1 hour in length. You will need to watch the webinar, receive a 80% or higher passing grade on a quiz, and then complete an evaluation to receive your certificate and complete this course.

During the webinar, the participants will learn about the intrathecal baclofen device. They will learn what patient will benefit most from the device, how the device works and what education is most important for the patient and family to learn. The webinar will also identify what rehabilitation nurses who encounter patients with this device should know including signs and symptoms of complications and what to do.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify what patients may present with a baclofen pump

  • The steps involved in identifying if a patient is appropriate for pump placement

  • List the equipment needed for pump management, dose changes and refills

  • Name at least one sign or symptom of baclofen pump overdose or underdose

  • Identify at least one important education point for patients with baclofen pumps and their families.

Sylvia Duraski, MS, ANP-BC, CRRN, CBIS, SCRN started her rehabilitation nursing career at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago in 1985 as a staff nurse, then clinical nurse specialist for the Center for Stroke Rehabilitation at RIC and lastly a nurse practitioner for the Brain Injury Medicine and Rehabilitation program at RIC. She has worked in the inpatient, outpatient and day rehabilitation programs. She has done clinical work, program development, education and research. She currently works as a nurse practitioner for Northwestern Medicine Regional Medical Group at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in the outpatient clinic. She has presented all over the United States, Canada, Bermuda and Japan. She is a certified rehabilitation registered nurse, a certified brain injury specialist and a stroke certified registered nurse. She has written numerous articles in Rehabilitation Nursing, Topics in Stroke Rehabilitation, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Neuroscience Nursing. She has written two book chapters, one in Rehabilitation Nursing and the second in Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation.  She has won multiple awards including the Association of Rehabilitation Nursing Advanced Practice Nurse award in 1998 and the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses Clinical Article Writer’s Award in 2017. She currently sits on the Advanced Practice Providers Executive Council of Northwestern Medicine West and South Region and is a Director at Large for the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses.
