Rehabilitation nurses know that Interventions to protect rehabilitation patients from injuries when they fall are separate and distinct from fall prevention strategies. For over a decade, protection from injurious falls has been a national patient safety objective. Yet, across rehabilitation settings, interventions to protect our patients from injuries when they fall have been met resistance. As a result, injurious falls are still occurring, resulting in preventable harm, hospital readmissions, extended rehabilitation, and loss of function and / or life, even though evidence-based interventions exists.
Learning Objectives
- Understand biomechanical properties of trauma-absorbing technologies designed to reduce fall-related injuries.
- Integrate protective interventions into patient safety care plans for at-risk-for-injury populations.
- Expand quality improvement methods to achieve progressive enculturation of injury-reduction strategies at the point-of-care.
