The Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) and the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses (NAON) recognizes and celebrates integration of expert orthopaedic and rehabilitation clinical nursing knowledge, skills and practices that maximize function, independence and safety of patients living with risk for hip fractures or known hip fracture. Across orthopedic injury conditions, hip fractures are one of the most disabling orthopeadic conditions.

Nurses also know that 95% of hip fractures are due to falls, mostly sideways (Gray-Micelli & Quigley, 2020). For over 10 years, protecting patients from injurious falls has been the call-to-action (Boushon et al., 2012; Oliver et al., 2010). While fall risks factors are complex, injuries, like hip fracture, are directly linked to the direction the body falls, the velocity of impact, and severity of osteoporosis (Tarbert, 2020; Yang et al., 2019; Unnanuntana et al., 2010).

When nurses learn about the burden, risk factors, pathology, and many opportunities for a hip to fracture during a fall, nurses will be compelled to increase appropriate patients’ knowledge, access and use of hip protection technology that provides that greatest preventive safety net.

Learning Objectives

•  Profile the burden, risk factors, morbidity and mortality associated with hip fractures.

•  Discover best practices in patient education programs, surgical and fracture liaison programs to improve patient awareness, care transitions and outcomes.

•  Discuss essential steps to integrate hip fracture injury prevention into practice.

•  Explain protective nature of current and innovative interventions to prevent fall-related hip fractures.

•  Apply strategies to reduce barriers to implementation and adoption to hip fracture prevention programs.
