
Changes in Skin and Tissue Post SCI and Implications for Pressure Injury Prevention

Understanding pressure injuries on a cellular level and correlating those with the changes to skin and tissue post spinal cord injury will help nurses determine the appropriate evidence-based practices pressure injury prevention strategies that are patient specific and unique to spinal cord injury patients. Along with critical thinking, nurses will be able to use this education to decrease harm and improve patient outcomes.
Learning Objectives
- Identify factors that contribute to decrease tissue tolerance that are specific to spinal cord injury.
- Identify spinal cord injury specific risk factors for developing a pressure injury and develop strategies to prevent them.
- Differentiate between the pathology of relieved pressure verses unrelieved pressure and how the intensity and/or length time under pressure contribute to the severity of the injury.
