In the United States, about one million individuals are blind and 200,000 have no light perception. To improve this marginalized population’s health-related quality of life and well-being, healthcare experts should fully understand the concept of “accessibility” in the healthcare context and design accessible healthcare services for those with visual impairments.

Soyoung Choi, PhD, RN - University of Illinois At Urbana-Champaign, Assistant Professor

Soyoung Choi is an Assistant Professor in the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is an internationally certified accessibility expert and the director of the Accessible Healthcare Lab. Her research focuses on utilizing mobile health (mHealth) technologies to improve the health outcomes and quality of life for individuals with (dis)/abilities, particularly those with visual impairments. Her goal is to enhance the ability and capacity for self-care of individuals with (dis)/abilities, utilizing a theoretical foundation and evidence-based interventions, to alleviate the impact of these conditions on their health and well-being. Drawing on nursing knowledge, she examines the health literacy and health behaviors of people with visual impairments to create persuasive health interventions. Recently, she has been developing a conversational mHealth platform to promote physical activity among individuals with visual impairments. She received her Ph.D. in Nursing from Pennsylvania State University.
