Effective Communication in Healthcare

In healthcare environments, when life-and-death decisions are made daily, effective communication by all team members is crucial. From communication between health practitioners and patients to communication between healthcare leaders and their staff, sensitive and urgent information is constantly flowing. You and your team must be able to communicate effectively to achieve desired patient outcomes and promote employee wellness, productivity, and satisfaction. In this micro-course, Effective Communication in Healthcare, you will examine concepts and strategies that can help healthcare leaders and healthcare workers communicate effectively.

You will learn about the basic elements of communication and the nature of interpersonal communication. You will examine factors in healthcare that can create communication barriers, and how these barriers can be overcome. You will explore how to address diversity, equity, and inclusion in communication, and the role of empathy and emotional intelligence. You will also examine strategies for healthcare leaders of various leadership styles to effectively communicate with patients and families, team members, and other organizational colleagues.
