It Takes a Village: Health Equity, Accreditation and the Role of Nursing in Concussion Management

Concussions affect 69 million individuals annually and result from causes including intimate partner violence (IPV), car accidents, falls, sports-related injuries and other forms of trauma. New person-centered, Concussion Management standards will support the rehabilitation of all individuals with concussion, and provide a gold standard of quality and performance improvement for all stakeholders.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss how concussion accreditation standards can be leveraged to improve health equity in all patient populations.
- Explore the CARF 2023 Concussion Rehabilitation Program Standards and identify how they can be used to improve quality and performance improvement of nursing care to persons with concussion.
- Demonstrate nursing's role in a Concussion Rehabilitation Program and define what unique skills nursing care can bring to the care of persons with concussion.
Terrence Carolan is Managing Director of Medical Rehabilitation for CARF International after being a CARF surveyor for 10 years. Prior to his role as Managing Director, Terrence worked at Select Medical and Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation for 20 years as a physical therapist, clinical manager, Director of Education and Assistant Vice President of Program Development and Education for the Inpatient Rehabilitation Division of Select Medical. Terrence received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from The College of New Jersey, a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Simmons University and a Master of Business Administration from University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.
