Nurses play an important role in the holistic care of the rehabilitation patient. Holistic care in the rehabilitation setting must include assessment and support for mental health.

This presentation will allow the learner the opportunity to realize the importance of mental health support in the rehabilitation setting and to consider the importance of targeted interventions. Differences in the effect of disability in patients with varied conditions will be reviewed, as well as the difference in risk factors and complicating factors. Types of mental health conditions will be addressed, and current research reviewed. The role of the rehabilitation nurse in screening, support and advocating for mental health care will be stressed.

  • The learner will have been offered the opportunity to examine the characteristics of mental health issues with varied rehabilitation diagnoses
