Chronic disease prevalence and management continues to be a top health issue, exacerbating the Covid-19 pandemic. Evidenced-based, non-pharmacological approaches to both prevention and management of chronic disease exist, but are not well integrated into health systems in the United States. This presentation reviews how non-pharmacologic approaches can impact chronic disease in patient populations, and play a role in empowering nurses and reducing burnout.

Dr. Prem Paul Nathenson has been involved in ARN since the mid-1990s. He has served as both president and president elect of the organization, he has also been a conference chairperson and health policy committee chairperson. He is a recipient of the President’s award and the distinguished service award both from ARN. After working in rehabilitation and long-term care for more than 20 years, Prem decided on a new career path and went back to school to become a nurse practitioner. He works in a clinic called Simple Path Health & Wellness with his wife Nancy. In addition to his clinic work Prem teaches full time in the graduate nursing program at Clarkson College in Omaha, Nebraska.
Sophie Nathenson, PhD, Associate Professor of Medical Sociology - Oregon Institute of Technology
Sophie Nathenson, Ph.D., is a Medical Sociologist and Associate Professor of Population Health at the Oregon Institute of Technology ("Oregon Tech"). Dr. Nathenson designs curriculum, teaches courses, and supervises community health projects. She designed Oregon Tech's Bachelor's Program in Population Health Management in 2014, and in 2015 launched the Population Health Management Research Center alongside her undergraduate students. In addition to serving as Director of the Population Health Management Research Center, she is faculty in the Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy and Masters in Allied Health programs at Oregon Tech. She holds a Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship from Portland State University, and as Owner of Widespread Wellness Consulting, she works to develop health curriculum that integrates healthcare, education, private sectors, and community based organizations.
